P.E.E.R. (Proud, Educated, Empowered, Responsible)

P.E.E.R. is a multiple-session series designed to engage at-risk individuals in discussion and activities that increase awareness and build prevention skills. Such issues as communication, decision-making, gender roles, power and control in relationships, and self-esteem are explored in the context of risk/risk reduction.

This program is designed for clients accessing care through human service, mental health, substance abuse, adolescent programs/facilities, homeless shelters, HIV/AIDS related care facilities/agencies, and more, to help individuals acquire the skills necessary to reduce their risk for HIV and STDs. Most sessions are 1-2 hours long.

P.E.E.R. session options

HIV/AIDS 101

A general introduction and overview of HIV and AIDS. This session provides information on transmission, testing, prevention, and risk reduction.

STDs

A general overview of currently prevalent STDs. This session provides information on which STDs can be cured and which ones can’t, how STDs are transmitted and prevented, testing procedures, and how individuals can reduce their risks for STDs. Also includes skill building for better communication with health care providers.

Hepatitis

What everyone needs to know about hepatitis A, B, and C to reduce their risks, prevent infection, get tested, and get treated if exposed or infected.

Healthy Relationships

This program helps participants recognize the healthy and unhealthy characteristics of relationships and identify 5 main elements of healthy relationships. It also works to increase awareness of a relationship’s impact on the individual’s ability to reduce his/her risk for HIV. Provides skill building opportunities for participants.

Domestic Violence

This program gives an overview of domestic violence through definitions and awareness of the patterns, types, and warning signs of domestic violence situations. Provides skill building opportunities for participants.

Communication

This program helps clients to identify different styles of communication. It also focuses on building better communication skills in order to help individuals get their needs met and reduce the risk for HIV and STDs.

Self Esteem

An exploration of the definitions and origins of self-esteem, and the impact of self-esteem on an individual’s life and ability to reduce the risk of HIV and STDs. Includes some skill building aspects.

Body Image

How the media, culture, family, and friends impact body image, and how that impacts on life decisions, self-esteem, and healthy relationships. Provides skill building opportunities for participants.

Decision Making

This session focuses on building skills and strategies necessary to help an individual make thoughtful and healthy choices for today and the future.

HIV+ Speaker

This program allows participants to develop empathy for HIV-infected persons, hear first hand what it is like to live with HIV, and also to realize their own vulnerability.
