Addicted to Love: Helping Clients with Mental Health and Chemical Dependence Issues Develop Healthy Relationships

Length: 7 hours

Description: This introductory program provides participants with hands-on ideas for effectively engaging clients who are dually diagnosed/MICA (mentally ill, chemically addicted) in conversations about risk behavior, sexuality education and information. In addition, this program explores the interaction between substance use, mental health issues, and sexual trauma on relationships, trust and risk behavior.

Addiction Issues: An Introduction to Substance Abuse Issues and Their Impact on HIV Prevention

Length: 7 hours

Description: This program provides a basic overview of illicit drug use; recovery ideologies and models; medical and psychosocial issues associated with drug use as they relate to HIV. In addition, we will provide tools, ideas, and techniques utilizing Harm Reduction and the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change.

Confidentially Speaking: An Overview of HIV Confidentiality Regulations

Length: 3 hours

Description: This program provides a working definition of Article 27F of NYS Public Health Law, including the intent, scope and major provisions. As needed, related confidentiality laws will be discussed. Participants will explore real-world situations in which these regulations apply, and review correct completion of releases of information form. This program meets the requirements for initial and annual HIV confidentiality training for human service and health care professionals.

First AIDS (HIV 101)

Length: 3 hours

Description: This is a general overview of HIV/AIDS, including but not limited to transmission; disease progression; the window period; testing; prevention; confidentiality; and the connection between drug/alcohol use, STDs, and HIV. An overview of Standard Precautions for blood-borne pathogens can be included to meet OSHA regulations and/or agency requirements.

Hepatitis: Special deLIVERy

Length: 3 hours

Description: Up-to-date information about the various types of hepatitis that are increasingly affecting client populations, including transmission, prevention, testing, treatment, vaccines, and disease progression. Additionally, this program will discuss HIV/HCV co-infection and the impact on treatment and disease progression.

HIV 201

Length: 3 hours

Description: For those who already have basic information about HIV/AIDS, this program offers more information about the various medications and how they work in the body, trends in the epidemic, harm reduction and other related theories, confidentiality, Partner Notification,
and more.

HIV Test Counselor Training

Length: 2 1/2 Days

Description: This training provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct pre- and post- HIV test counseling in accordance with NYS laws and regulations. In addition, this program will review all required aspects of HIV test counseling including (but not limited to): addressing benefits and barriers to testing, effective domestic violence screening, proper completion of documentation and methods of discussing risk behavior/reduction and partner notification.

HIV Treatment Update

Length: 3 Hours

Description: This workshop will provide a general overview of the latest information current and emerging HIV medical interventions and treatment issues, as well as, side effects management presented from a non-clinical perspective. In addition, this program will explore some of the interactions between HIV anti-retroviral medications and street drugs. Finally, treatment adherence issues, especially for clients in recovery, will be discussed.

The Language of Sex: How to Talk to Your Clients about Sex and Sexuality

Length: 7 Hours (can be adapted to 3 hours)

Description: If you can’t talk about it, how can you work on it? This program is designed to familiarize staff with the language currently associated with sex and sexuality among various cultures and subcultures in order to increase awareness and comfort in discussing sensitive issues with your clients.

Mixed Messages: Tailoring HIV/STD Prevention to Meet Your Client’s Needs

Length: 7 Hours

Description: This highly interactive basic-level program provides practical ideas to effectively tailor conversations about risk behavior to the unique needs of your client population. In addition, this program provides tools and strategies to help clients identify and reduce HIV and STD risks, and to help providers incorporate HIV/STD prevention methods and skills building into ongoing services.

Positive Prevention: Increasing Information and Prevention Strategies for Clients Who are HIV+

Length: 7 Hours

Description: In this interactive program, providers will explore prevention issues specific to HIV+ individuals such as disclosure; co-infection and super-infection; viral load and transmission; psychosocial issues and more. Participants will have the opportunity to practice techniques for incorporating prevention strategies into day-to-day work with HIV+ clients.

Preventing HIV Among Substance Users

Length: 3 Hours

Description: This interactive basic-level program will increase participant’s knowledge of the HIV – Substance Abuse link and provides tools and information for integration of HIV/STD prevention into existing services with clients in a recovery setting in assessing HIV risks and developing personalized risk reduction plans.

STDs and HIV: Making the Connection

Length: 3 Hours

Description: This program provides an overview of the interrelationship between HIV/STDs with an emphasis on prevention and integration of services. Topics to be discussed are: HIV/AIDS and STD overview, the benefits of early detection of STDs, the effects of STDs on HIV disease progression and transmission, and risk assessment tools and risk reduction strategies.

Working with Client Resistance

Length: 7 Hours

Description: This program will present a redefinition of client resistance in the framework of behavior change models. Participants will explore the issues of treatment adherence, harm reduction, behavior change, and client ambivalence. In addition, this program provides helpful ideas, suggestions and activities to assist staff with “difficult” clients.

Working with the HIV+ Client

Length: 7 Hours

Description:This program will assist providers in coordinating both care and prevention with clients who are HIV+ by identifying the three levels of prevention/intervention; providing tools and techniques for assessing risk with clients; and providing a working definition of confidentiality requirements by reviewing the intent, scope and major provisions of NYS Article 27 F of NYS Public Health Law. In addition, participants will explore the issues of treatment adherence, harm reduction, behavior change, and client ambivalence.
